Mechanical Plant Noise Assessments

To meet challenges of keeping buildings adequately ventilated and temperature controlled, mechanical equipment is increasingly being installed on rooftops, in gardens and other outdoor areas.

Commercial kitchens, workshops and factories also rely on mechanical extraction systems to get rid of fumes and odours.

These types of equipment contribute to increasing background noise levels in urban areas and can sometimes cause noise complaints.

Planning

When applying for planning permission for a new Air Source Heat Pump, air conditioning unit or mechanical extraction system, Local Authorities are likely to request a noise assessment.

We provide robust noise assessments for planning applications, helping our clients demonstrate that noise has been properly addressed.

Design & Mitigation

Sometimes it is necessary to modify designs to meet noise constraints. By using calculations to predict sound levels from plant, we can trial different design interations and advise on components needed to reduce noise.

Complaint Investigation

Sometimes noise complaints are inevitable and require an independent assessment.

We can act as impartial advisors, assessing the noise in accordance with relevant British Standards and Local Authority noise guidelines. Once it has been established whether mitigation is required, we can advise on appropriate noise control measures.

Extraction Systems

Extraction systems can produce high levels of noise and are often installed in urban areas close to people who are sensitive to noise.

Designing in noise mitigation from the outset is likely to be more effective than trying to remedy noise later on, so its imperative that noise is considered at the earliest possible opportunity.

We undertake the necessary sound calculations and assessments to ensure that noise from extraction systems is properly controlled.

ASHP / Air Conditioning Plant Noise Assessments

Air Source Heat Pumps (ASHPs) are becoming increasingly common in residential settings, and can be a source of noise.

ASHPs can sometimes be installed under Permitted Development Rights (PDR) through the Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS). However, there is still a requirement to meet certain noise limits. In some cases, planning permission is required and a BS 4142 assessment is needed.

Evolved Acoustics can undertake the necessary surveys and assessments to evaluate noise from ASHPs and other plant in line with Local Authority Requirements.
